ICBC Treatment After a Car Accident: What Our Delta Patients Need to Know

A car accident can leave you dealing with more than vehicle repairs and insurance paperwork. Neck stiffness, back pain, headaches, muscle tension, and reduced mobility can make work, driving, sleep, exercise, and everyday activities more difficult.

If you’ve been injured in a collision, you don’t have to figure out your recovery on your own. At Elite Health & Wellness, our role is to help you understand your treatment options and create a personalized plan that supports your recovery. From our Delta clinic, we provide chiropractic care, Registered Massage Therapy (RMT), and acupuncture for eligible ICBC patients from Delta, North Delta, Surrey, and surrounding communities.

How Does ICBC Treatment Work After a Car Accident?

Under ICBC’s Enhanced Care system, eligible B.C. residents injured in a crash can access pre-approved treatments during the first 12 weeks after the collision, regardless of who was responsible. You don’t need to wait for a doctor’s referral or separate ICBC approval before starting these pre-approved treatments. You’ll need to report your claim first so that you have an ICBC claim number.

If you’re planning to begin treatment at our clinic, you can learn more about our ICBC injury treatment in Delta before your first appointment.

As of September 2026, ICBC lists the following pre-approved treatment amounts for services we provide at Elite Health & Wellness:

Treatment Pre-approved sessions within first 12 weeks

Chiropractic care 25

Registered Massage Therapy 12

Acupuncture 12

The 12 weeks are counted from the date of your crash. That makes it helpful to report your claim and begin appropriate care promptly rather than waiting until the end of the pre-approved period.

What Do You Need Before Starting ICBC Treatment?

Getting started is usually straightforward. You don’t need to have your entire recovery plan figured out before contacting us.

For treatment at Elite Health & Wellness, have these details available:

  • Your ICBC injury claim number

  • Your Personal Health Number

  • The date of your accident

ICBC also confirms that a claim number and Personal Health Number are needed to access pre-approved treatment during the first 12 weeks.

What Should You Do After Your Accident?

Your recovery should focus on helping you return to the activities that matter to you, whether that’s working comfortably, driving, caring for your family, exercising, or simply moving through your day with less discomfort.

A practical starting process is:

  1. Report your collision and injury claim to ICBC. You’ll receive an ICBC claim number that your treatment provider may need for billing.

  2. Pay attention to your symptoms. Pain and stiffness don’t always appear immediately after a crash.

  3. Book an assessment. A healthcare provider can evaluate how the collision has affected your movement and function.

  4. Follow a treatment plan based on your needs. You may not need every available treatment or every pre-approved visit.

  5. Stay involved in your recovery. Follow home-care, movement, posture, and rehabilitation recommendations when they’re appropriate for you.

  6. Keep your ICBC recovery specialist updated. Communication is important as your recovery progresses.

ICBC encourages care that helps restore your previous level of function, not simply treatment for the sake of using available appointments. Active strategies, including appropriate movement and rehabilitation, can be an important part of that process.

What Symptoms Can Happen After a Car Accident?

Every collision is different. Some people notice symptoms immediately, while others begin feeling sore or stiff later that day or the following day. HealthLink BC notes that symptoms associated with whiplash may sometimes appear the day after an injury.

Common concerns after a motor vehicle accident can include:

  • Neck pain or stiffness

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder discomfort

  • Muscle tension or soreness

  • Reduced range of motion

  • Headaches

  • Pain that makes sitting or driving uncomfortable

  • Difficulty returning to normal exercise or daily activities

Headaches, dizziness, confusion, vision changes, or other neurological symptoms require extra attention because a collision can also cause a concussion or more serious head injury. Those symptoms shouldn’t simply be assumed to be muscle tension.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help After a Car Accident?

Chiropractic Care for Pain and Mobility

Our chiropractic care in Delta focuses on the muscles, joints, spine, and other structures involved in movement. After assessing your symptoms and mobility, treatment may include spinal or joint mobilization, soft tissue techniques, posture recommendations, ergonomic guidance, and rehabilitation exercises.

We’ll look at how the collision has affected you and develop care around your symptoms, mobility, injury history, lifestyle, and recovery goals.

For someone dealing with a neck or back strain after a collision, for example, treatment may focus on reducing discomfort, restoring comfortable movement, and gradually helping you return to normal activities.

How Can Registered Massage Therapy Help After a Collision?

RMT for Muscle Tension and Soft Tissue Injuries

Registered Massage Therapy in Delta uses hands-on techniques to assess and treat muscles and other soft tissues. After a car accident, muscles can become sore, guarded, or tense as your body reacts to the impact.

Your RMT treatment may focus on areas of tension or restriction that are affecting your comfort and mobility. Depending on your assessment, techniques can be used to address muscle tension, support flexibility, and help you move more comfortably.

At Elite Health & Wellness, RMT is part of our multidisciplinary approach, which means you’ve got access to several types of care from one Delta clinic when they’re appropriate for your recovery.

Can Acupuncture Be Part of ICBC Accident Treatment?

Acupuncture for a Personalized Recovery Plan

Yes. Acupuncture is one of the treatment categories pre-approved by ICBC during the first 12 weeks following a crash, with up to 12 pre-approved treatments currently available.

Acupuncture in Delta involves the placement of thin needles at specific points on the body. Within your accident recovery plan, it may be considered as one option for managing pain and supporting your overall recovery.

We’ll recommend care according to your individual needs. You don’t need to use chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture simply because they’re available. Your treatment plan should make sense for your symptoms and recovery goals.

Do You Need a Doctor’s Referral for ICBC Treatment?

For ICBC’s pre-approved chiropractic, RMT, and acupuncture treatment within the first 12 weeks, you don’t need a referral from a family physician or nurse practitioner, and you don’t need to obtain separate treatment approval from ICBC before getting started.

That doesn’t mean medical care is unnecessary after every collision. If your symptoms suggest a concussion, fracture, serious head injury, or another condition requiring medical assessment, appropriate medical care should come first.

Will You Have to Pay for ICBC Treatment at Elite Health & Wellness?

At Elite Health & Wellness, we don’t charge a user fee for eligible ICBC-covered chiropractic, Registered Massage Therapy, or acupuncture treatment described through our ICBC injury treatment program. Our clinic also helps manage and monitor your treatment sessions so you’ve got clearer guidance through the process.

This is specific to our clinic. ICBC notes that providers elsewhere may charge more than ICBC’s approved treatment amount, in which case a patient can be responsible for the difference.

What Happens If You Still Need Treatment After 12 Weeks?

Recovery doesn’t follow exactly the same timeline for everyone. If you’re still experiencing crash-related limitations after the initial 12-week period, additional treatment may be available.

The important difference is that treatment beyond the initial pre-approved period isn’t automatically covered in the same way. Your healthcare provider can assess your ongoing needs and communicate with your ICBC recovery specialist about a possible benefit extension. ICBC states that patients whose recovery takes longer may qualify for additional treatment based on their needs.

At Elite Health & Wellness, we can support that process when additional sessions are clinically appropriate. Our focus remains on helping you progress toward your normal level of function rather than simply extending treatment without a recovery-based reason.

When Should You Seek Urgent Medical Care After a Crash?

Muscle soreness and stiffness are common after collisions, but not every symptom should be managed through routine chiropractic, massage, or acupuncture appointments.

Seek urgent or emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Severe chest or abdominal pain

  • Trouble breathing

  • Heavy bleeding

  • New weakness, numbness, or tingling

  • Confusion or extreme sleepiness

  • Repeated vomiting

  • A worsening headache

  • New vision problems

  • Significant difficulty walking or maintaining balance

HealthLink BC recommends emergency assessment following a major accident or when potentially life-threatening symptoms are present. If you’re unsure whether a symptom requires emergency care, you can also call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 for guidance.

Why Is a Personalized Treatment Plan Important?

Two people can be involved in similar collisions and experience very different symptoms. Your work demands, previous injuries, activity level, areas of pain, mobility restrictions, and recovery goals can all affect what treatment is appropriate.

That’s why we don’t believe your recovery should revolve around simply using every session ICBC makes available. At Elite Health & Wellness, we’ll assess where you are now, listen to what you’re having difficulty doing, and build a personalized treatment plan around helping you improve mobility, reduce pain, and return to the parts of daily life that matter to you.
